Mechanism and Expression - The collection of Ann and Jurgen Wilde - Photography from the 20th Century (until 19 November 2000)
Ann and Jürgen Wilde, who live in the Rhineland, are among the pioneers who championed photography as art. Parallel to running their gallery (1972-1985), this couple continually built up a collection that surely must be seen as one of the most significant worldwide photo collections of the 20th century. The more than 1500 photographs comprise workgroups from the greatest photographers of classical modernism as well from the present. The main personalities from the 20s and 30s are well represented, such as Karl Blossfledt, Florence Henri, Germaine Krull, Albert Renger-Patzsch, August Sander, Man Ray. As to more recent photography, a focus on the 70s and the 90s becomes apparent. This is attested to by internationally known artists like Bernd and Hilla Becher, Bernhard J. Blume, Lee Friedlander, David Hockney and William Wegman. The exhibition in Bonn is showing a representative selection of about 150 works. With the exhibition of these select photographs that can, for the most part, be found on permanent loan in the Sprengel Museum in Hannover, the Kunstmuseum Bonn continues the ongoing cooperation with Mr. and Ms. Wilde, which has already led to exhibitions of the works of Blossfeldt (1994) and Renger-Patzsch (1996).
