With his long hair, feminine makeup and naked body, Ma's appearance on stage is a straightforward representation of transgender. Ma could be androgynous in the sense that the two genders coexist. However, Ma is not the final product of gender transfer, but continues to hover between the two genders. In other words, by remaining in "an undifferentiated state" in which he looks both like a man and a woman, this state then permeates the air around him.
