Bombs and Restless Lovers
Kontainer Gallery is pleased to announce new work by Carolyn Castano.
Castano's work can best be described as ''elegantly emphatic,'' variant
lines and forms insisting upon themselves effortlessly, creating a series
of images sprung simultaneously from the worlds of fashion and craft.
Utilizing a variety of media including fake gem stones, glitter and
feathers, Castano's paintings stand as tableaus to decadence, to wispy
exoticism, and the strange, evacuated landscape of human desire. Often
women's faces are seen in profile, in illuminated dresses of beads and a
grand stand array of feathers, leaving the viewer to wonder if ''Castano's
women'' are gazing inward at themselves, or trying to escape what they know
to be true about the choices they've made, and the ways they choose to
live.
Favorite images include bulls, matadors, peacocks, butterflies, a woman's
gold shoe, and an array of flowers breaking into bloom. Castano's images
conflate seduction with manufactured beauty. The women who populate these
painting-scapes seem consistently poised on the verge of personal
revelation, and yet they must wait forever in their self contained fervor,
their glittering utopia.
Carolyn Castano's work was featured in ''International Paper'' at Hammer
Museum, LA, ''Dead Hotel'' at Kontainer and ''Semiprecious'' organized by New
York Public Art Fund. In February 2005, she will show in ''Step into
Liquid'' Contemporary Watercolor Painting in Los Angeles, Pasadena Museum
of California Art curated by Leslie Jones.
Carolyn Castano is represented by Kontainer Gallery.
