Two exhibitions

Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich

The exhibition 'Passion for Art – Otto van de Loo and his Gallery' is an hommage to a gallery owner and collector of the 1950s and 60s. The artists who he represented, for example from the Informal art movement and especially those from the groups 'Cobra' and 'Spur' propagated a strongly colorful, expressive and spontaneous visual language that stood outside of established norms and traditions. The exhibition Architecture of the Wunderkinder will show the entire scope of the architecture of the Wiederaufbau (post-war reconstruction) from radical new beginnings to extensive reconstructions, using Bavaria as a case study.

PASSION FOR ART – OTTO VAN DE LOO AND HIS GALLERY
February 2-April 3, 2005

The exhibition 'Passion for Art – Otto van de Loo and his Gallery' is an hommage to an extraordinary gallery owner and collector of the 1950s and 60s. The artists who he represented, for example from the Informal art movement and especially those from the groups 'Cobra' and 'Spur' propagated a strongly colorful, expressive and spontaneous visual language that stood outside of established norms and traditions.
Opposed by the local, conservative cultural-political scene, and viewed with mistrust from politically left-oriented circles as a 'capitalistic dealer', the actual view of the aesthetic quality of his gallery work was all-too-often obstructed. With almost 100 works, mostly from the Otto van de Loo Foundation at the Nationalgalerie Berlin and the Foundation of the Kunsthalle Emden, the exhibition will offer a fulminant panorama of the physically figurative and informal painting in Europe in the years in question. The fully illustrated catalogue expands on the topic with a wealth of documentary material and introductory essays.

Architecture of the Wunderkinder
Progressive and Regressive Orientation in Bavaria 1945 - 1960
February 3 - April 30, 2005

The exhibition will show, for the first time, the entire scope of the architecture of the Wiederaufbau (post-war reconstruction) from radical new beginnings to extensive reconstructions, using Bavaria as a case study. The range will extend from programmatic modern architecture – represented by names like Sep Ruf, Hans Maurer and Werner Wirsing – through to the large group of architects who embodied a "pragmatic," function-oriented modern architecture, and to conservative architects like Paul Schmitthenner and Roderich Fick, who sought to continue in a more traditional and historical vein.

The title of the exhibition was taken from the film "Wir Wunderkinder" (1958), in which the Wirtschaftswunder of the 1950s is outlined through a look at two contrary German traits. These schematically depicted sides shown in the film also epitomize the reconstruction, which is characterized by, on the one hand, new beginnings, and, on the other hand, by continuity and orientation on the past. Just as modernization and restoration, emergence and suppression dovetailed with each other in West German society after 1945, the architecture of the 50s also reveals a duality, which the exhibition and accompanying catalogue will examine and demonstrate in detail, using Bavaria as a case study.

Only after taking a close look at the post-war reconstruction that took place in a German federal state, can the range as well as the social background of early post-war architecture be appreciated; indeed, most individuals today are no longer aware that they live in cities whose design first came into being after decisions were made by citizens, politicians and architects. Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the Reichstrasse in Donauwörth, the Fuggerei in Augsburg and Munich's Residenz were all severely damaged and that, which tourists and inhabitants so admire and take for granted today, are, to a large degree, reconstructions. This restoration of the familiar vistas of the pre-war period meant massive intervention in cities with regard to transportation and new applications, as well as modern modular buildings and the sweeping forms of the new, light "democratic" architecture.

Through the more than 200 typical structures and plans selected, a differentiated as well as fascinating reflection of an era is established in both the exhibition and catalogue – a reflection that found its characteristic expression in all areas of life. The exhibition will strive additionally to heighten appreciation for the variety and range of 50s architecture, and to raise consciousness vis-à-vis the significance and quality of these increasingly endangered buildings.

The exhibition will present numerous previously unknown objects (over 400 contemporary photos, ca. 300 plans and models), primarily taken from the holdings of the Architekturmuseum der TU München. The architecture presentation will be supplemented with design objects, posters and books, as well as fashion of the times. In order to better understand the urban development plans, film animations have been produced.

For the exhibition, a comprehensive publication from Anton Pustet Verlag Salzburg will be published (ca. 360 pages and ca. 540 illustrations) at a price of ca. 39 euros in the museum shop or as a trade book edition in bookstores for ca. 48 euros.

The exhibition and catalogue have been made possible through the generous support of the Ernst von Siemens Kunstfonds.
