Bernd Lohaus
05.02 - 10.04.2005

The work of Bernd Lohaus (b. 1940, Dusseldorf; lives and works in Antwerp) is characterised by the combination of sober and solid sculptural forms that include a few words. These messages often refer to human relationships; such as the words Ich/Du on the two sides of a wall, which is a reflection on the definition of the ‘self’ and accepting that one is also ‘the other’. These combinations of words evoke contrasts and correspondences, and thereby expose inner tensions. This solo exhibition shows several existing works as well as some being presented for the first time. A number of finished bronzes are brought face to face with their cire perdue moulds; the subtle but powerful suggestiveness of the preparatory ideas (the ideal) and the final result cast in bronze (reality). In addition to these bronzes, several of Lohaus’ typical sculptural installations in solid wood are being shown, as well as a series of drawings and watercolours.

Michaël Borremans
05.02 - 17.04.2005

This exhibition combines two travelling shows by the Belgian artist Michael Borremans (b. 1963), one of drawings, the other of paintings. Since the mid-nineties he has been working on a world of intriguing and enigmatic images. In so doing he usually starts out from reproductions in newspapers and photographic books, from both the early 20th century and today. He does not copy his source material, but zooms in on particular elements, changing them so that they are alienated from us. His detailed drawings look as if they date from a distant past, and illustrate particular customs or actions. His attention to detail and the smallness of his works creates an intimacy between them and the viewer, so that the effect of the images is surprisingly direct and powerful.

Orla Barry - Portable Stones
05.02 - 17.04.2005

The starting point for the artistic work of Orla Barry (b. 1969, Wexford) which includes publications, films, sound recordings, performances and photos, are her own writings. They are an expression of the way our thoughts work. They skip from one thing to another, alternating between important facts and minor observations, between personal impressions, memories, poetry and her imagination. It is up to the reader-viewer to give meaning to her work and to tie up the loose ends. Barry sees art as a way of giving shape to an image or vision of reality. The images can be dictated by the words; the visual work adds an extra layer of meaning to the writings. The outcome is an acute tension in which the two elements enhance one another. The first screening of her new film 'Portable Stones' will be given at the SMAK exhibition, which also includes work both old and new, comprising photos, writings, film and sound pieces.
