After the Rain
The Curve
‘How do we reshape an environment following a period of catastrophic destruction?’
After the Rain is an exciting new commission by Toby Paterson, winner of Becks Futures 2002.
Through his large-scale wall paintings, sculptural installations and paintings on perspex, Paterson explores the concepts and realities of post war urban reconstruction
This new work emerges from Paterson’s current research into the redevelopment of Rotterdam, Coventry and Hamburg, all extensively damaged during the Second World War. After the Rain examines the process that creates our built environment, from ideology and intention, through conception and finally into construction. Whether it results in symbolic and iconic buildings or the anonymous, this process is always politically and emotionally charged.
After the Rain builds on ideas Paterson explored in recent exhibitions at Sutton Lane, London, Tate St Ives and Glassbox, Paris. Utilizing architectural drawing techniques, city topographies and isolated fragments of buildings, Paterson builds up a rich, new and highly subjective landscape of ideas and images.
