NEW WORK
Kontainer Gallery is pleased to present works by Neal Rock. Balanced
somewhere between the fantastical and the beautifully grotesque, are Neal
Rock’s visually arresting works, oddly fluid even in their fixedness.
Working in pigmented silicone rubber, plastic and paper flowers, and other
mixed media, Rock builds specific and vaguely biomorphic environments into
corners of rooms, or growing like lichen along the perimeter of a wall.
These rubberized mutations appear almost to spring organically from the
gallery in an endless process of regeneration.
Rock’s work is humorous and playful, wild and reactive, as these weirdly
dystopic forms cluster and break apart in random patterns. Clearly Rock
understands chaos especially as it relates to the unpredictability of his
materials, and these small eruptions of color seem to multiply even as
they remain static against the white wall.
Neal Rock has recently showed in "Collection One" curated by Stephen
Hepworth at Issabella Brancolini Arte Contemporanea, Florence, Italy with
DJ Simpson and Toby Ziegler and in "EXPANDER" curated by Mustafa Hulusi at
The Royal Academy, London with Haluk Akakce, Dubossarsky and Vinogradov,
Dee Ferris and Mark Titchner, in Growth Co. at Kontainer, Los Angeles with
Hillary Bleecker and in solo shows at fa projects, London and Henry
Urbach, New York.
Currently, his work can be seen in "Landscape Confection" curated by
Hellen Molesworth at Wexner Center for the Arts, Ohio. The show will
travel to MOCA Houston and Orange County Museum of Contemporary Art.
