comunicato stampa

Short exhibition with works from: Nam June Paik, Vasulkas, Marc Burkett, Livinus & Jeep van de Bundt, Paul Dougherty and Dove Eylat

At first sight the work of a VJ looks very much like video art. It uses almost the same equipment and therefore has a similar aesthetic. On the other side, it has also taken over a lot from performance - particularly the live creation of an experience in which various senses are stimulated simultaneously. Many VJ’s themselves seem to compare their work particularly with the latter, and at the same time see a direct connection with the rise of techno music and the video clip in the 1980s.

The exhibition Wonderwall will be showing works from the collection of the Netherlands Media Art Institute. These works provide a historical frame from video art, that reflects the aesthetic of many contemporary VJ performances. The selection includes work from Nam June Paik, Vasulkas, Marc Burkett, Livinus & Jeep van de Bundt, Paul Dougherty and Dove Eylat, among others.

Along with the exhibition, the results of the research project ‘VJ Culture: A Phenomenon in History, Presentation and Perception’ will be presented. It includes interviews with Dutch VJ’s Arno Coenen, Olga Mink, Elsbeth van Noppen, Micha Klein, Danielle Kwaaitaal, Peter Rubin, Gerald van der Kaap, Pips:Lab, Captain Video, Geert Mul, Telco Systems and Eboman. Tapes of Dutch and international live image and sound performances from Microscope Sessions; VeeJay Groove; VeeJay Nights; The best of VJ Culture 2003/04 – ICA London and the Chemistry – Veronica 1999.
