MNCBM explores issues of cultural difference, and the construction of identity through the ubiquitous languages and processes of abstraction and minimalism. MNCBM confronts and problematizes our understanding of late 20th century abstraction by questioning the meaning of this abstraction in relation to the social and political issues of cultural identity and ideas of difference.
The five artists involved in MNCBM - Mimi Tong, Nuha Saad, Carmen Soraya, Beata Geyer and Monika Tichacek - will push the limits of painting, blurring its conception and expanding its capacity through installation, sculptural and digital processes. The installations will be site-specific responses to Artspace's architechtonics.
Curated by Nicholas Tsoutas and Jacqueline Phillips.
MNCBM is a Commonwealth Government 2000 Young and Emerging Artists Initiative focussing on artists from a non-English speaking background and has been assisted by the Australia Council, the Federal Government's arts funding and advisory body.
