comunicato stampa

Two solo shows of artists Amaya Bozal from Madrid and Laura Harrison from New York.

Contexture refers to a weaving together and also to composition. The works in this show speak to the interplay between both textured and flat surfaces and to literal and more abstract compositions. Both artists seek to bring to the viewer new understandings of familiar scenes… the body, bricks, wallpapers, etc. In so doing they give the everyday a breath of the ephemeral and the new. They help the viewer to see again in a new light.

Amaya Bozal
Works on Paper

Bozal exhibits rich encaustic and oil works on paper featuring the image of a torso of a woman. The soft rendering of the torso is in contrast to the built up surface. The works take on a larger presence and a lyrical notion as a nod to Bonnard and to Degas.

In Madrid, Spain, where she resides, Bozal continues as one of the most important young artists in her country. Recently exhibited at ARCO, where her paintings sold-out, her work receives great critical and popular acclaim. Recent editorials have appeared in La Opinion, El Pais Seminal, and Flux News.

Laura Harrison
New Paintings

Harrison presents new paintings on canvas that continue her exploration of surface and structures. Images are drawn from brick walls and real and imagined wallpapers. Paintings on linen, often cut and mounted on canvas, provide the viewer a fresh look at ubiquitous mundane surfaces. The walls of bricks or the memories of wallpapers come alive in a new presentation; at once realistic and abstract.

In his review of her last solo show at PSCA, David Cohen wrote in The New York Sun, that her first show was “a must see” and he continued on to say that “she already has a voice of her own” and that her paintings have a “delicate, knowing slightness.” Mario Naves, writing in The New York Observer, noted that Harrison was one of several “consequential” artists in The 179th Annual: An Invitational Exhibition of American Art at the National Academy last year.
