Ridicule is Nothing to Be Scared of. For this exhibition the artist has created a grand homage to dandies. One large felt mural spans an entire gallery wall with characters reveling in shameless indulgence. Gobel's meticulous placement of felt elevates his medium and jocular subject into paintings of eloquence. The mural remains lighthearted despite its highly personal content.
Ridicule is Nothing to Be Scared of
For this exhibition James Gobel has created a grand homage to dandies. One large felt mural spans an entire gallery wall with characters reveling in shameless indulgence. Gobel's meticulous placement of felt elevates his medium and jocular subject into paintings of eloquence. The mural remains lighthearted despite its highly personal content. The spivs are being primped and primmed for a Psychedelic Victorian tea party. Swirls of ribbon unfurl around the catwalk procession of rosy-cheeked chubby generals bedecked in Haute Couture. Glam Rock is woven into the edges of each character as he poses in his larger-than-life persona. Majestic mountains rise above green mist in a setting befit for the grand entrance. Gobel has created a fanciful world to inhabit where servants in knickers serve cherry pie to the fantastical kings who hold court.
James Gobel lives and works in Los Angeles. His work is currently included in ICI's "One Hundred Artists See God," curated by John Baldessari and Meg Cranston a traveling exhibition as well as "The Altoids Curiously Strong Collection" a traveling exhibition of recent acquisitions. His work was also recently included in "Eye of the Needle" at Roberts & Tilton in Los Angeles. This will be his fourth solo show in New York.
