International Art Fair
Art in total freedom in all its professions
A wide and fascinating artistic range
The 14th Europ'ART edition currently under way – the opening of which is planned with the presence of Mr Pascal Couchepin, Federal Councillor, and, among the foreign prominent figures, Mr Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, French minister of Culture and Communication – is being enriched as the weeks go by, through the impulse of the more and more numerous Swiss and foreign exhibitors applying for it.
At the same time, the institutional part is also increasing, and will cover a wide and fascinating artistic range. Here are a few aspects of it.
After the much noticed presence in 2004 of the Musée d'art moderne et contemporain (Mamco), we will welcome to Europ'ART the Centre pour l'image contemporaine which is showing in Geneva some cultural events based on the new picture technologies (video, multimedia, Internet, but also photography and cinema). Its activities go from the production to the collection of works, and include exhibitions and regular screenings. Some great moments ahead thanks to André Iten and his team!
Given the success of the Musée Ariana in 2003, which we are all aware of, we have asked the art gallery owner Mrs Marianne Brand to organise an exhibition devoted to contemporary ceramics. The long experienced acquired at her Carouge gallery in this field (150 exhibitions set up over some 18 years) together with her constant desire to share her passion with a wide public (since 1989 she has been promoting the “Carouge ceramics itinerary†during which an International ceramics competition at the Carouge museum is also being held, with the support of the local council) guarantee a beautiful tribute to innovative ceramics.
Every year, a museum contributes to the discovery of the artistic and cultural heritage of a canton. For the 14th edition, it will be the Fribourg canton's turn with the Musée du Pays et Val de Charmey, under the direction of its lively curator, Patrick Rudaz, who has been organising the Triennial International Paper Festival since 1993.
For its part, Visarte, the swiss visual artists society (Geneva branch, presided by Mrs Renée Furrer) will make itself known, in particular through several (video) films regarding some of its members. A decision which somehow echoes a current wish to give greater access to local artists, Genevan ones especially, by making them more visible. A visibility which Europ'ART has been encouraging since ... its creation.
We shall also have the pleasure to host a (rare) exhibition thought up by French art critic, essayist and novelist, Mr Jean-Philippe Domecq, who was at the origin of the big debate on contemporary art in France during the last decade of the 20th century, with the Esprit magazine (Editions Flammarion have just published his last book: “A new introduction to 20th century artâ€).
As to the Arab World Institute (Paris), its curator, Mr Brahim Alaoui, is preparing an exhibition on contemporary Moroccan art (Farid Belkahia, Abderrahim Yamou et Nadjia Mehaji), together with a retrospective of the Institute's participation in Europ'ART since 1995, with a view to inform the major media in the Middle East. At the same time this will mean an increase of exhibitors and therefore of artists from countries like Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, the Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey.
All in all, between the art galleries who have applied, the artists and the institutions, some 25 countries are already represented.
Finally, let us recall that, thanks to our partnership with the press and to some advertising campaigns, this 14th edition will be promoted through a good thirty members of the Swiss and foreign media, including radio stations, television channels and major French-speaking daily newspapers (Le Temps, La Tribune de Genève, 24 Heures, etc.) and over 55,000 publications (posters, invitations, preliminary programmes, catalogues, Guest Card information, etc.).
