The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) was incorporated in December 1981, operating for the first five years from temporary offices with docent-led tours of Wilhelmina Cole Holladay and Wallace F. Holladay collection of artwork executed by women artists which forms the core of the institution's permanent collection. In the spring of 1987, NMWA opened its permanent location, a 78,810-square-foot former Masonic Temple near the White House with the inaugural exhibition American Women Artists, 1830-1930.
