Sculptural works in the form of life-size that critique modern society, and the political climate of the day

comunicato stampa

Levels 3 & 4

BALTIC presents a ground-breaking exhibition by Edward and Nancy Reddin Kienholz - the largest showing of Ed Kienholz work in the UK since 1971. This major exhibition presents large-scale sculptural works in the form of life-size environments, incorporating everyday objects that critique modern society, and the political climate of the day. Compelled by a deep sense of moral justice and a provocative sense of humour, these uncompromising creations continue to have a searing power and pose a direct challenge to the viewer.

This exhibition includes works created by Ed Kienholz from 1963, through the unique collaboration he established with Nancy Reddin Kienholz in 1972 until his death in 1994, and the works that Nancy continues to create. This exhibition is curated and organised by BALTIC in association with the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, with additional support from The Henry Moore Foundation.

The Kienholz’ exhibition appears at BALTIC courtesy of L.A Louver Gallery, Venice, California. A new publication on the work of Ed and Nancy Reddin Kienholz is being produced in conjunction with this exhibition, published by BALTIC in association with the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney.

Antti Laitinen
17 April 2005 – 10 July 2005
Artist in Residence

Artist Antti Laitinen from Helsinki, Finland will undertake a 3 month residency at BALTIC from 17 April – 10 July. Laitinen’s work draws on physical performance and its subsequent documentation and his current practice involves excursions into different terrains. A map is refined into an artwork that records the artists’ experience of moving around a particular environment. Laitinen starts by printing his own self-portrait onto a map and then orienteers along the outline of the image, using a GSM positioning system. This self-portrait traces a trip that has been physically experienced, allowing for the limitations set by nature or the city space, and records an image of a new environment. Laitinen will further develop this body of work during his BALTIC residency.

This residency is in collaboration with FRAME (Finnish Fund for Art Exchange).
