Take it furthur!

Andrew Mummery Gallery, London

Part 1. Curated by Gyonata Bonvicini. Furthur was the original name of the 'magical mystery tour' bus, used by Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters; the ones who started the entire psychedelic movement. The 1970s have been mythologized in a number of ways and constantly represented as an endless source of alternative imagerie. The exhibition is the dynamic synthesis of increasingly subversive attitudes by a young generation of artists exploring the tension between aesthetic sensibilities and a darkening global vision.

"I make out a school bus ... glowing orange, green, magenta, lavender, chlorine blue, every fluorescent pastel imaginable in thousands of designs, both large and small, like a cross between Fernand Leger and Dr. Strange, roaring together and vibrating off each other as if somebody had given Hieronymous Bosch fifty buckets of Day-Glo paint and a 1939 International Harvester school bus and told him to go to it." (Ken Kesey)

Furthur was the original name of the "magical mystery tour" bus, used by Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters; the ones who started the entire psychedelic movement. The 1970s have been mythologized in a number of ways and constantly represented as an endless source of alternative imagerie. After more than 30 years, what is the legacy of this grand transformation, and why is this aesthetic still so affective? TAKE IT FURTHUR! is the dynamic synthesis of increasingly subversive attitudes by a young generation of artists exploring the tension between aesthetic sensibilities and a darkening global vision. The project - developed in two distinct, exhibitions – provides a setting to express their idiosyncratic voices freely as they investigate a creeping uneasiness in the Western society.

The artists included in TAKE IT FURTHUR! try to oppose the present-day economic and cultural amorphousness as well as the mass cultural industry, through the strong reassertion of the ideas of personal development, individual inner accomplishment, cultivation of complementary identities, but also through social and political responsibility.

Andrew Mummery Gallery and Gyonata Bonvicini would like to thank Artprojx for their support in this project.
