History of Fellows of Contemporary Art:
For the past three decades, the Fellows of Contemporary Art has underwritten
exhibitions and collaborated with museums, galleries, and exhibition spaces to
showcase and document innovative work in a variety of media. Through their
Curator’s Awards, they have sponsored more than thirty-five exhibitions at over
forty venues nation-wide, enabling arts professionals to present a wide range of
shows, including the recent landmark exhibition Thing: New Sculpture from Los
Angeles at the Hammer Museum at UCLA (2005); Topographies, San Francisco Art
Institute and Pasadena Museum of California Art (2004); Whiteness, A Wayward
Construction, Laguna Art Museum (2003); Eleanor Antin, Los Angeles County Museum of
Art (1999); and James Turrell: Occluded Front, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los
Angeles (1986). For each exhibition, FOCA has worked with curators and artists to
produce a fully illustrated, scholarly catalogue.
Originally founded as a support group for the Pasadena Museum of Modern Art, FOCA
evolved into an independent philanthropic organization when the Pasadena Museum
became the Norton Simon Museum of Art in 1975. Since then, the group has been
dedicated to supporting the development of new art and to encouraging the public
recognition of contemporary California artists.
