The artist is known for his 'Sculptural Paintings' composed from multiple small canvas covered cubes and short dowels. These smaller objects are generously painted and assembled together magnetically. From afar the works look very monochromatic but on closer inspection the viewer will be surprised to see dozens of additional colors in each composition.
Sculptural Paintings
Recent Acquisitions: The O. Walter Donnenfeld Collection
The Riverside Art Museum is proud to present new work by artist Carlos
Estrada-Vega in the Bobbie Powell Gallery. Estrada-Vega is known for his
sculptural paintings composed from multiple small canvas covered cubes and
short dowels. These smaller objects are generously painted and assembled
together magnetically. The small painted cubes and dowels that comprise
each work can vary painting to painting and range from 12 to 5,000. From
afar the works look very monochromatic but on closer inspection the viewer
will be surprised to see dozens of additional colors in each composition.
In a recent article in the Los Angeles Times, Christopher Knight says of
Estrada-Vega's art, "In addition to joyous, this is sly and savvy work."
This exhibition will also include Estrada-Vega's new works on paper. As
part of the Museum's Monthly Art Forum Lecture Series, Carlos Estrada-Vega
will give an ART TALK on September 8, 2005 at 6:30pm.

The Riverside Art Museum is proud to announce the exhibition of a major
collection of paintings recently donated to its permanent collection by the
artist O. Walter Donnenfeld. This gifted collection, over 50 oils on canvas
and mixed media works on paper, spans nearly six decades of the artist's
career in New England and Southern California.
Riverside Art Museum's Executive Director, Daniel Foster states, "These
paintings are exceptional, and fully reflect the artist's talent and
development over his career." Donnenfeld's paintings, although focused
primarily on the figure, are also accomplished studies in abstraction with
strong emphasis on composition and color. His subjects often exist in a
solitary and distorted spatial plane, challenging the viewer to construct
deeply personal, even psychological, narrative and meaning.
This exhibition surveys Donnenfeld's range of approaches and techniques
developed during his long artistic career. At 81 years of age, Donnenfeld
continues to experiment and paint regularly in his San Diego studio. Upon
completion of this exhibition, the Riverside Art Museum will make the O.
Walter Donnenfeld Collection available to travel nationally for exhibition.
