Manny Silverman Gallery is proud to announce an exhibition of the works of
Robert Motherwell dating from 1947 to 1985. This exhibition will consist of
approximately 50 works on paper and canvas that span the artist's career;
including examples from his most well known series; Elegies to the Spanish
Republic, Beside the Sea, and the Opens. Also included in the exhibition
will be a selection of works from his Lyric Suite of 1965.
Robert Motherwell, painter, printmaker, teacher, and writer who died in 1991
was known as one of the founding fathers of Abstract Expressionism and an
artist of international stature. Born in 1915 in Aberdeen, Washington,
Motherwell spent the early part of his life in California. In 1926, at 11
years of age, he received a scholarship to attend Otis Art Institute here in
Los Angeles. He went on to receive a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy
from Stanford University and then furthered his education with a year of
graduate studies at Harvard. After spending a year in Paris, he moved to
New York in 1939. Throughout the 1940s and 50s, Motherwell became
increasingly involved with the New York art scene and the exiled European
artists who were living there at the time. In 1944 Peggy Guggenheim mounted
the first Robert Motherwell solo exhibition at Art of this Century and out
of this exhibition sold Pancho Villa, Dead and Alive to The Museum of
Modern Art.
Motherwell enjoyed an extremely successful career that spanned five decades.
His works have been the subject of countless exhibitions and retrospectives
at museums and galleries around the world and dozens of books on his work
and writings have been published. During his long and illustrious career,
Motherwell received virtually every honor that could be bestowed upon a
living artist. He left behind a tremendous legacy and it is our privilege to
be exhibiting his work.
