(Un)Masking: the Art of Disguise/Disclosure in Asia-Pacific Cultures
Taipei National University of the Arts and Yi-Lan National Centre of
Traditional Arts will host a series of arts events from 6th to 30th October,
2005. The contemporary art exhibition, entitled 'Disguises and Identity'
coordinated by Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts will be part of the series.
The invited international artists include Al Fadhil (Iraq), Zanny Begg
(Australia), S. Chandrasekan (Singapore-Indian), Aissa Deebi (Palestine),
Madan Lal (India), and Jakraphun Thanateeranon (Thailand); and Taiwanese
artists, Wen-Hsiang Chen, Yuan-Nuan Fan, Shu-Jane Lee, and Paula Yeh.
The exhibition explores the impacts and the roles Asian culture plays in the
process of interacting with the trend of globalization. The Forum is also to
bring into focus issues of identity in the Asia-Pacific context as well as
challenge the possibilities to change the existing modes of thought and
discourse. This exhibition intends to examine the ambiguous, yet rigid, and
sensitive, yet systemised, existing cultural forms from different aspects,
and call into question the established social hierarchy and conventions. It
also attempts to stimulate debates and discussions in art and cultural
production and provoke the possibilities to loosen the existing social
system.
