In celebration of the 10th anniversary of Alliance Francaise in Sarkies Road, Morceaux Choisis – Chosen Pieces showcases works by one of France’s most famous architects, Dominique Perrault.

Morceaux Choisis displays ten projects, transmitting Perrault’s artistic values and process which consist sobriety, cleaness, and spatial approach of the works.

The award-winning architect designed the world famous National Library in France, where he was awarded the Mies van des Rohe Prize in 1997 and honourably, the facade of the Alliance Francaise right here in Singapore.

In addition, he gives numerous lectures and participates in juries and seminars. HE also teaches at several universities, among them the E.T.H. in Zürich, Switzerland. This exhibition is also brought to you by ‘French Affair with Singapore’, a celebration of all things French from 12th October to 25th November in Singapore. The Alliance Française takes an active part in organising a number of cultural events during the festival.

DOMINIQUE PERRAULT
"Architecture is an art that creates the forbidden.
Take a piece of land, build a wall on it, and you are indisputably already making architecture. You separate the land into two parts and you physically create a division. If you’re on one side, you’re not on the other.

This act is indubitably an act of authority. How can one resolve this…How can one construct, edify or build, without rendering opaque the landscape in which you just placed the structure? This doesn’t have to do with the scale of things but is of course more about materials, and even more about what you expect from architecture. This is what leads me to evoke "the death of architecture" that I proclaim for my own discipline.

For my part, I tend to focus more on the landscape than the construction itself, as a material. Today, the material for architecture is no longer inexorably glass, concrete and metal; it’s the land as it exists, as one infiltrates and circulates through it.”

Dominique Perrault was born in Clermont Ferrand in 1953 and now lives and works in Paris. He received his architecture degree in Paris in 1978 and his certificate in town planning at the Ecole nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in 1979. In 1980, he received a postgraduate degree in History at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes in Social Sciences.

Dominique Perrault opened his Paris office in 1981. He gained his reputation in France after the completion of two major projects: the engineers' school ESIEE in Marne-la-Vallée and the Hôtel Industriel Berlier in Paris, for which he has since been awarded several prizes.

He won the international competition for the construction of the French National Library in 1989, and in 1992, the international competition for the Olympic Velodrome and swimming pool in Berlin, for which he opened another office in Germany. These two projects ensured his international fame.

In 1996, he won the competition for the Court of Justice of the European Community in Luxembourg, and opened a third office in Luxembourg in 2000. In 2002, Dominique Perrault opened two more agencies, one in Barcelona and another in Baltimore in the United States.

Dominique Perrault has recently completed an extension of the town hall in the centre of Innsbruck, Austria. His current projects include: extending the Court of Justice of the European Community in Luxembourg constructing the new Olympic tennis centre in Madrid, Spainurban planning for the centre of Donau city, including three towers and the riverfront redevelopment of the Danube in Vienna, Austria
constructing of the Montigalà stadium and its surroundings in Badalona near Barcelona, Spain constructing of 2 hotels, 4 and 5 star, on the Diagonal in Barcelona, Spain
designing a metal-mesh firm in Cambridge, Maryland, USA
constructing of several supermarkets for the M-Preis chain in Austria urban planning and design for the Teresitas seafront and village including the construction of a five star hotel in Tenerife, Spain. urban design for Piazza Gramsci in Cinisellao near Milan, Italy

Dominique Perrault's work is extremely varied and includes many new constructions and numerous renovations. The architectural programs of these projects range from large buildings, such as cultural or sports projects, to smaller projects, such as urban “insertions” in blighted urban areas to private housing in prestigious neighbourhoods.

In addition, he gives many lectures and participates in numerous juries and seminars. Dominique Perrault also teaches at several foreign universities, among them the E.T.H. in Zürich, Switzerland.

He has been awarded various prizes, notably the Great National Prize of Architecture in 1996 and the Mies van der Rohe Prize for the National Library in France in 1997. Furthermore, Dominique Perrault is Chevalier of the Legion of Honour, member of the Architecture Academy, honourable member of the German Association of Architects (BDA) and of the British Institute of Royal Architecture.

From November 1998 to February 2001 he was President of the French Institute of Architects. Dominique Perrault is currently an architectural consultant for the mayor of Barcelona.
