21 Years of Collecting for Scotland
In January 2006, Sir Timothy Clifford will step down as Director-General
of the National Galleries of Scotland, after twenty-one years in the
post. To celebrate more than two decades of his memorable and
influential leadership, the Galleries will mount a special exhibition
this autumn, highlighting the dramatic expansion of the national
collections in this period. Sir Timothy will perhaps be best remembered
for his dedicated passion with which he has pursued and secured major
acquisitions, helping to give Scotland one of the greatest collections
of Western art in Europe.
Choice: 21 Years of Collecting for Scotland will bring together some of
the finest and most fascinating of these acquisitions, and will comprise
more than 500 objects. These will range from Ancient Roman sarcophagi
to drawings by Raphael; from Allan Ramsay portraits to spin paintings by
Damien Hirst. This free exhibition, which will encompass sculpture,
paintings, drawings, prints, miniatures, photography, and the decorative
arts, will be shown at the Royal Scottish Academy Building, the National
Galleries' newly refurbished, world-class exhibition space, which opened
in the heart of Edinburgh in 2003.
