New Paintings and Works on Paper
The Michael Kohn Gallery is pleased to present New Paintings and Works on Paper by
New York artist Will Cotton. In his first exhibition at the Los Angeles gallery,
Cotton presents a new body of work highlighting his trademark pairing of the
luscious female form placed amongst rich candy-filled surroundings. Using real life
maquettes of sweets, cakes, and candies created in his studio, Cotton is able to
capture the true decadence of his fabricated sucrose landscapes.
Of his paintings brimming with fantasy and sensuality Cotton states, “I see the
figures both as inhabitants of the place and as objects of desire themselves, just
like the candy and cake that surrounds them.†His elegant portrayal of the female
form is paired with the faces of unfulfilled desire in a self-obsessed world.
Cotton intermingles the classical tradition of figure drawing with a 20th Century
Pop sensibility resulting in a strange and beautiful work of art.
Cotton received a residency grant from the Monet Foundation in 2002 and has studied
at Beaux Arts in Rouen, France; La Napoule Art Foundation in La Napoule, France,
Cooper Union in New York, as well as the New York Academy of Art.
