Chung King Project is pleased to announce, for the second exhibition at the
new gallery, a joint exhibition with David Burrows and Bob and Roberta
Smith.
Popnosis, will be David Burrows and Bob and Roberta Smith's first
collaborative exhibition in the USA. Together the artists will use the
formal devices of intense colour, abstraction, scale, and the over-loading
of information to exert an hypnotic charge upon the exhibition's audience.
The exhibition will present Bob and Roberta Smith's text panels 'I BELIEVE
IN PIERO DELLA FRANCESCA', 'LEFT IS THE NEW RIGHT', 'BOTICELLI SUCKS',
alongside Burrow's foam wall text works 'The Modern Spirit is Never Again',
'The Spirit has Eyes Like Almonds' ' The Modern Spirit is Bee-sting Lips'
and the pure formal overload of mirror- works such as 'Total Blam Blam'.
Popnosis employs the aesthetic of pop in the service of formal hypnosis. If
this is the works' affect, their subject is the quasi-religious, evangelical
communication of a system of beliefs, a hierarchy of values, a redressing of
the rules of the game of art. Popnosis declares the possibility of spiritual
and epistemological change through art.
Alongside the wall pieces in the show, the artists will fabricate two
sculptural works in the space. A barricade will combine found debris from
the city of Los Angeles with painted panels and fabricated elements in an
alchemical work which transforms the base material of the city through
slogans, collage and ephemera specific to the time and place of its making
into a message for a civilisation in crisis. Alongside it will rest a floor
sculpture in the form of a shrine.
Popnosis will be the newest development in the history of collaborative
exhibitions, projects, performances and events between David Burrows and Bob
and Roberta Smith, which began in the days of BANK. Bob and Roberta Smith's
recent exhibitions include South London Gallery, London, Gallerie
Krinzinger, Austria, Whitechapel Gallery, London, and Intelligence - New
British Art 2000, Tate Britain. David Burrows' recent exhibitions include
New Life, Chisenhale Gallery, London, Rose C'est La Vie, Tel Aviv Museum of
Art, Israel and Micro/Macro: British Art 1996- 2002, Mucsanok/Kunsthalle,
Budapest.
