Two Exhibitions

Gallery C will present emerging artists Kenny Harris and Kirtland Ash with two solo exhibitions. “La Habana – Images from Cuba” will be on exhibit in the main gallery and “New Works” will show in the front gallery through January 21, 2006. The exhibits will be kicked off with an artist cocktail reception and live five-piece salsa band on November 17, 7 – 10 p.m.

Kenny Harris: La Habana-Images of Cuba

In preparation for his solo exhibition, Kenny Harris journeyed to Cuba for artistic inspiration, allowing the island country to serve as his muse from which he created his sensually calm interior scenes. Armed with an ever changing color palette, it is unclear whether it is the art that drives him, the traveling, or perhaps it is both. According to Harris, “When I am abroad, I am more open to seeing spaces with a fresh eye, so I can take advantage of this openness by seeking images that move me.”

Kirtland Ash: New Works

Kirtland Ash’s new series of line paintings is an about-face from his previous works which consisted of a multitude of circles on expansive canvases, but still no less skillful and mathematically driven. In “New Works,” Ash explores the use of vivid, bright colors that are layered, creating an effect of color peeking out at some points and bursting out in others. The process is finished with a technique that allows the paint to be coaxed to life by slightly escaping into tiny droplets. Ash’s skillful and mathematical technique permits the viewer to become hypnotized by its flow.
