The
Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien will
put about 120 of its main works temporarily on
display in Vienna's Künstlerhaus. This exhibition
will allow the public to view the highlights of the
Museum's collection during its move to the Museum
Quarter.
The exhibition will document the importance of the
collectors Peter and Irene Ludwig (a married couple,
Peter Ludwig passed away in 1996) for the
MMKSLW's collection. In addition to works provided
by the collectors, the Austrian Ludwig Foundation
has made numerous of its acquisitions available to
the Museum as loans. The Austrian Ludwig
Foundation was set up in 1981 by Peter and Irene
Ludwig and Hertha Firnberg, who was Federal
Minister of Science and Research at that time. The
decision to set up a foundation was motivated by an
exhibition shown in 1977 in the Künstlerhaus - Kunst
um 1970. Sammlung Ludwig Aachen im
Künstlerhaus Wien, which ran from 8 March through
12 June 1977. From the outset, the goal of the
Foundation has been to complement the existing
collection with internationally acclaimed works of 20th
century art. Following a proposal made by the
Museum director, the works are selected by an
international panel of experts. In 2001, incidentally,
the Austrian Ludwig Foundation will celebrate its 20th
anniversary.
