The artist was born and raised in Kenya and came to the U.S. in the mid-1990s. Using a combination of collage and ink work to create plasmic surfaces and distended figures, she has adopted the flamboyant yet mutated female figure as a central part of her work. Creating distorted characters that reflect the extreme emphasis on physical appearance in contemporary society, she highlights the contamination and violence that comes from the pursuit of symbols of affluence and power. Her exhibition braids together all manner of figural chimera, mangrove trees and a video projection based on the popular hymn, Amazing Grace, to celebrate the travails and resilience of displaced populations.
