Sharon Lockhart

Placed in relation to important early works, the current exhibition highlights series of photographs taken in the Amazon basin of Brazil. Though they appear in the guise of scientifically objective, anthropological field research, the effect is undermined by the artist's intense and unfathomable devotion to detail and chance moments. Thus, the same fishing family on the island of Apeú-Salvador is repeatedely portrayed but with subtle differences.
Always working at the interface between film and photography, Sharon Lockhart will be showing her 35 mm film Teatro Amazonas at the same time in a cinema. Shot at the opera house in Manaus, it does not focus on the stage but rather on the audience, a mix of natives and immigrants typical of the urban population.
