Anne-Marie Schneider

Tracy Williams, New York

New works on paper and canvas as well as a Super-8 film. Like the pages of a diary, her works embody the raw, unfiltered stream of consciousness associated with automatic writing. Schneider's body of work not only reflects the depths of her own psychological universe, but also tackles the political and social struggles of the external world. Employing bold, fluid line and dense washes of color, she seamlessly weaves together forms and figures to reassemble the world.

comunicato stampa

"Schneider's work is infused with tragedy and comedy, the absurd and the utterly obvious, in a world where we need to be able to glide between these categories if we are to confront the monsters of reality." -Laurence Bosse', Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, catalogue

Tracy Williams, Ltd. is pleased to present an exhibition of new works on paper and canvas as well as a Super-8 film by French artist Anne-Marie Schneider. Schneider's exhibitions include a solo show at Galerie de l'Ecole Supe'rieure d'Art in Lorient in 2004, Fragile Incassable, a solo exhibition at Muse'e d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 2003, a solo exhibition at the F.R.A.C. Picardie in 1997, and Documenta X in 1997. Schneider has also been included in Vitamin D: New Perspectives on Drawings recently published by Phaidon Press with a text by Hans Ulrich Obrist. This will be the artist's first solo exhibition in the United States.

In Etre Un Autre (To Be An Other), Anne-Marie Schneider presents Vertiges d'Amour , a new series of sixty-nine line drawings, Mariage-a Super-8 film, one of her first paintings and several large scale works on paper. Vertiges d'Amour, executed in India ink on paper, explores the deep enrapture of loving another. Through lyrical, liquid strokes and delicate composition, one can feel the sensuality of the bodily forms that Schneider composes. Schneider's larger works in gouache and ink and painting explore toys of childhood and fairytale characters to articulate the fragility of self, innocence and fantasy- and their ultimate demise through life and love. Mariage 2003 combines still, animated drawings and documentary style footage.

Like the pages of a diary, Schneider's works embody the raw, unfiltered stream of consciousness associated with automatic writing. Schneider's body of work not only reflects the depths of her own psychological universe, but also tackles the political and social struggles of the external world. Employing bold, fluid line and dense washes of color, Schneider seamlessly weaves together forms and figures to reassemble- and ultimately find truth in- the world, as we know it.

"Sometimes I am showered right on the head with cold opinions. I find myself threadbare, washed out, discolored as dishwater. I remain floored, flattened, just lying there on the floor.
Our story and the story of others are not distinct." -Anne-Marie Schneider
