Some Changes. Through works such as Untitled (I Am A Man) (1988), the Richard Pryor painting series (1993-2004), and Hands (1996), which refer to significant events in this country’s civil rights history, the exhibition reveals Ligon’s focus on the representation of the individual within the larger context of American culture, and highlights issues and themes to which he returns repeatedly in his work in various media.
Some Changes
Glenn Ligon: Some Changes explores the idea of “revision" in Ligon’s career, following the development of the artist’s creative process and his choices of both source text and art-making techniques to express his views.
Through works such as Untitled (I Am A Man) (1988), the Richard Pryor painting series (1993-2004), and Hands (1996), which refer to significant events in this country’s civil rights history, the exhibition reveals Ligon’s focus on the representation of the individual within the larger context of American culture, and highlights issues and themes to which Ligon returns repeatedly in his work in various media. The exhibition also features recent signature works such as End of Year Reports (2003), Orange and Blue Feelings (2003), and The Story of the Orange and Blue Boats (2003), which focus on the artist’s childhood and the origin of his creative spirit.
In addition, the exhibition includes a new work in neon, Negro Sunshine (2005), created specifically for the show and its international tour, and an audience-participation project unique to each venue. In Houston, Ligon will draw a large American flag on a wall painted to look like a slate or blackboard, where visitors will be invited to write their interpretation of what it means to be an American today.
The exhibition is accompanied by a 204-page catalogue containing extensive color reproductions and essays by Wayne Koestenbaum, Mark Nash, Huey Copeland, and Darby English, as well as an interview with Ligon by Stephen Andrews, and documentation on the artist’s career.
Following the presentation at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, the exhibition will also travel to the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, (September 30 - December 31, 2006); the Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio, (January 27 - April 22, 2007); and Mudam - Muse'e d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, Luxembourg (October 6 - December 17, 2007).
