The show comprises a selection of oil and acrylic sprayed-painted paintings and large-scale ink drawings. Depicting utopian science-fiction landscapes, post-modern interiors and abandoned shopping centres, Dobler chooses to leave these landscapes without figures.

Solo show

Alexandre Pollazzon Ltd is pleased to present the debut London solo exhibition by the Swiss artist, Andreas Dobler.

Since 1985, Dobler has contributed widely to cultural areas including music, film and theatre. However, it is the medium of painting that has remained constant throughout such a multi-disciplinary career.

Influenced by pop music and psychedelic culture and its related neo-surrealism of the 1960s and 1970s as well as science fiction and comic aesthetics, Dobler draws from the resource of a media-influenced youth and commonplace culture, creating spaces that are to be immersed in. Dobler¹s landscapes are surfaces for projecting desires and longings, whether they are portrayals of spiritual kingdoms or urban ruins, both worlds cannot be fulfilled in reality.

The exhibition at Alexandre Pollazzon Ltd comprises a selection of oil and acrylic sprayed-painted paintings and large-scale ink drawings. Depicting utopian science-fiction landscapes, post-modern interiors and abandoned shopping centres, Dobler chooses to leave these landscapes without figures. Instead, he places the art motif, often paying homage to Henry Moore, Alberto Giacometti and other familiar sculptors of classical modernism. Such futuristic vistas can seem to be lacking in warmth, but in fact, evoke a sense of the erotic and mystical.

The painting entitled No Man's Land' suggests an inhabitable place with the dilapidated ruins of a modern world. A cash machine nestled within a nook connects to a shape that is similar to that of a letterbox. Cash machines also appear again as ruins in the painting, ŒA Lucky Day¹, where floating lottery number balls pass through and decorative motifs adorn such cold machinery.

In contrast, Manavgat' is a contemplative Nirvana-esque landscape, containing the calming elements of a waterfall with a soft lilac-coloured city in the background against a sunset on the horizon, whereas ŒIntoxica¹ takes its direction from Dobler's roots as a science-fiction illustrator, a bold grid platform has been scribed with grafitti tags and anarchic splashes and drips.

Placed in the centre of the gallery, an anonymous garden chair holds two almost intertwined bass guitars firmly fixed in Styrofoam, forming the only sculpture in the exhibition. The juxtaposition of the everyday object and a fragment of pop culture represent the diverse combination of subjects that inform Dobler's unique interpretation of other worlds.

Dobler was born in Biel in 1963 and lives and works in Zurich.

Past exhibitions include: Durchzug/Draft, Kunsthalle Zurich, Zurich; Andreas Dobler, Magasin CNAC, Grenoble (2003), Kunsthaus Glarus, Glarus, Switzerland (2002).
