Thumbnail Gallery Post
Previously, Tessi's paintings depicted the romanticism and glamour
associated with modern lifestyle and luxury travel, derived from images that
were sourced from a wide range of brochures and magazines.
The exhibition Thumbnail Gallery Post' is a new series comprising
approximately fifty small-scale paintings that are appropriated from images
that have been downloaded from pornography websites.
The term Thumbnail Gallery Post' or TGP, is widely used on the Internet,
and is a common type of ad driven web page that contains a vast quantity of
pornographic thumbnail images and provides links to commercial websites.
Methodically browsing for material, Tessi found that an increasing number of
images available on the Internet seemed to rely on a heavily fictionalized
level of violence, portraying a world of adolescents and young adults
experiencing an intrinsic turmoil.
However, Tessi's paintings subvert this common interpretation, in order to
suggest other narrative connotations and possibilities.
Through the use of a photographic and cinematic language and a painterly
execution, Tessi's intention is that the paintings do not exploit the
stereotypes of sensuality found both in pornography and advertising. But
instead, to present them in such a light that they are stripped of their
innate values, and that they become part of a dysfunctional photo album
where objectified characters and non-descript spaces provide the necessary
elements for what could unfold as a non-linear trailer of a teenage B movie.
Private view date: Friday 21st April 6-8pm.
