The Cuban artist shows portraits of political figures through the effect they have on people. Transforming speeches by politicians into a sound installation, Bruguera assigns notes to the original texts, creating scores to be performed by a choir - in this way, transforming political monologues directly into an emotional response from their audience.

Discourse is not only that which conflict or Systems of domination translate into language: it is that by means of which one struggles; it is the power with which one seeks to take possession of the self.
Michel Foucault, The Order of Discourse, 1977
Bruguera's artistic works are sustained by the major theme of the masses and power as seen from the perspectives
of political communication and its effects on thought and perception. As already intimated by the above citation from
Michel Foucault, political discourse cannot simply be reduced to the components that define its content. It mobilises
emotions from which source it takes its mass psychological energy. It is these emotional responses which Tania
Bruguera traces in her sound installation "Portraits", which she produced for the exhibition at the Kunsthalle Wien's
project space in Chicago and which will be shown afterwards at Kunsthalle zu Kiel.
The Cuban artist portrays great figures in the political arena purely by the receptive effects which these release
among their respective publics. By way of an elaborate procedure, a selection of speeches by various politicians is
translated into musical notes. Thus produced, the scores are then made audible by a choir that claps the notes and
consequently transformed into audience response. The second part of her work is an out of doors publicintervention, which will take place only at the openings in Vienna and in Kiel.
