Vienna’s central role as a market place for and a hub for information about the development of contemporary art in Central Europe will be confirmed for the second time. A special presentation is dedicated to the sculpture for open spaces. There will be also a series of video curated by Stephanie Moisdon and a part dedicated to the performative arts.
From April 6 to 9, 2006, Vienna’s central
role as a market place for and a hub for information about the development
of contemporary art in Central Europe will be confirmed for the second
time. The strategy that Reed Exhibitions Messe Wien has chosen for this
art fair, namely to focus on Central and Eastern Europe, creates the
special atmosphere typical of the >VIENNAFAIR<, and it grants collectors
and the wider public interested in art new insights into the steadily growing
art world, as well as offering excellent presentations of internationally
renowned galleries. Edek Bartz, exhibition director of the >VIENNAFAIR<
is pleased about the current status of pre-registration and states that “we
are very glad that the galleries from the CEE-countries use this opportunity
to present themselves internationally".
Great performance
At the VIENNAFAIR 2006 the presentation of galleries from the CEE-
countries will again be sponsored by the ERSTE BANK, as already at last
year’s VIENNAFAIR. With this, the galleries Plan B, Noua and H`Art
(Romania), Zvono and Remont (Serbia and Montenegro), Gandy and
Space (Slovakia), Display (Czech Republic), Raster (Poland), CAC -
Contemporary Art Center (Lithuania), Gregor Podnar and Skuc (Slovenia)
receive the opportunity to concentrate on their presentations without
having to worry about the costs. Matthias Limbeck, New Business,
Marketing and CEE manager at Reed Exhibitions Messe Wien explains:
“To us, a successful strategy for this fair is to support the galleries from the
CEE-countries in their market development. That is why at Reed
Exhibitions Messe Wien we decided to make it possible for another five
galleries to participate at the fair by sponsoring them." This decision also
enables Le Guern (Poland) and Vintage (Hungary) to participate again at
the VIENNAFAIR. For the UNIQUA Insurance Group, Austria’s leading
insurance company and art insurance, this is one reason to become
involved in the VIENNAFAIR 2006 and act as its main sponsor. Petra
Eibel, head of the art insurance division at UNIQUA states: “We think that
the VIENNAFAIR, with its focus on the CEE-countries, matches our
company and our self-image of the UNIQUA Insurance Group as a
European enterprise with Austrian roots perfectly".
Internationality is programme
And it is not only the galleries from the CEE-countries which are
numerously present at the VIENNAFAIR 2006 - also the Western art
world presents itself at the fair. Next to Austria’s top galleries which will
exhibit almost without exception, Berlin, with eight galleries, is the second
most often represented city at the fair. The galleries Buchmann, DNA,
Schultz and Spielhaus Morrison decided to exhibit again at the
VIENNAFAIR and Crone, Martin Mertens, Jette Rudolph and Upstairs
participate for the first time at this event. Other galleries from Germany
which intend to exhibit again since their sales figures at last year’s issue of
the VIENNAFAIR were highly satisfying, are 20.21 (Essen), Benden &
Klimczak (Viersen), Hollenbach (Stuttgart) and Six Friedrich (Munchen),
amongst others. Wetterling Gallery from Stockholm also hopes to continue
this year with last year’s success. The galleries I-20 and Priska C. Juschka
from New York decided to leave their booming Chelsea District for a short
side-trip to the VIENNAFAIR, and a global player, Marlborough Galleries
from London, could also be won for exhibiting at the art fair in Vienna.
Daniela Hinterholzl, exhibition manager of the VIENNAFAIR, is pleased
about the fact that many galleries will exhibit at the VIENNAFAIR for the
first time and states: “All in all, we were again able to increase the number
of international galleries participating in 2006 - with this, VIENNAFAIR
affirms its status as equally ranking amongst the international art fairs".
The programme within reach
STAGEzone, a multi-purpose stage area, will be incorporated in the fair’s
venue, hall A, in order to make it as easy as possible for the visitors of the
VIENNAFAIR to participate in the side programme. This will enable the
visitors to observe the presentations and panel discussions and to
experience them as an integral part of the VIENNAFAIR.
Moving Art
The VIENNAFAIR 2006 will present for the first time video
performances, specially designed for the occasion. Ste'phanie Moisdon,
art critic, curator and founder of the Bureau des Videos, Paris, compiled a
series of video clips/films which represent the diverse activities of the
Bureau des Videos. This series includes clips/films by both emerging
artists as well as major representatives of the contemporary art world: John
Armleder, Luidgi Beltrame, Laetitia Benat, Pierre Bismuth, Ecart, Marina
Faust, Sylvie Fleury, Luc Fowler, Vidya Gastaldon, Gilbert & George,
David Lamelas, Walter Pfeiffer, Pia Ronicke, Sturtevant, amongst others.
(STAGEzone, Thursday, April 6, 2006, 12 am to 7 pm, Sunday, April 9,
2006, 11 am to 6 pm).
A special highlight of the side programme will be the presentation of
Helmut and Johanna Kandl’s visual “Les flaneurs des balcans". Personal
contacts and friendships as well as their artistic projects have been taking
Helmut and Johanna Kandl continually back to South-Eastern Europe,
especially to Serbia, where Johanna Kandl studied at the beginning of the
80ies. The two artists present an associative analyse of their photo-
impressions in their visual “Les flaneurs des balcans" which they created
specifically for the VIENNAFAIRby order of Reed Exhibitions Messe
Wien.
(STAGEzone, Thursday, April 6, 2006, 12 am to 7 pm, Friday, April 7,
2006, 12 am to 1 pm, Sunday, April 9, 2006, 11 am to 6 pm).
Information and discussion
How interested is the West really in art from Eastern Europe? Should
young emerging art actually be exhibited in museums? To what extent is
the contemporary art world really connected to the artistic creation
process? These are only a few questions for which a group of experts will
try to find answers in their panel discussions which will take place at the
VIENNAFAIR.
Especially in Austria and Germany there has been an authentic boom of
exhibitions of art from the Balkan countries since the opening of the new
EU-member states and, even more so, since their actual accession to the
EU. Emil Brix, head of the cultural policy section at the Austrian Federal
Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Hans Knoll, gallery owner, Antun Maracic,
director of the museum for modern art, Dubrovnik, Boris Marte, head of the
section for corporate sponsoring of the ERSTE BANK, Vienna, Katalin
Neray, director of the Ludwig Museum, Budapest, Annemarie Turk, head of
the section Cultural Sponsoring of KulturKontakt Austria and Peter Weibel,
director of the ZKM, Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany will
analyse the contribution of art in the process of European integration of the
Eastern-European countries and discuss the status of the art market and
Austria’s role in the cultural exchange in the panel discussion “The art
market in South-Eastern Europe".
(STAGEzone , Friday, April 7, 2006, 1 pm to 2.30 pm).
Georg Schollhammer, managing editor of the magazine Springerin,
Vienna, Klaus Albrecht Schroder, director of the Albertina, Vienna, Adam
Szymcyzk, director of the Kunsthalle Basel and Gujs van Tuyl, director of
the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam will analyse the risks of collecting
contemporary art in museums and will debate whether or not museums will
still be able to justify their buying policies in a hundred-year’s time in the
panel discussion “Forever young - to what extent should museums aim at
contemporary collections?"
(STAGEzone , Friday, April 7, 2006, 2.30 pm to 4 pm).
The last of the panel discussions, “The contemporary art market - boom or
bust?" will offer an outlook to the further growth opportunities of the art
market and critical reflections of the current boom within the context of the
artistic discourse. Panellists are Beatrix Meidinger, director of the Viart
Corporation, New York, Jianping Mei, professor at the Stern School of
Business, New York University, Robert Punkenhofer, artistic director of the
viennaartweek, Vienna, Kenny Schachter, gallery owner, critic, curator and
artist, London, Petra Schapers, representative of Austria’s auction house,
the Dorotheum, in Dusseldorf, Germany, and Barbara Steiner, director of
the Galerie fur Zeitgenossische Kunst, the gallery for contemporary art, in
Leipzig.
(STAGEzone , Friday, April, 7, 2006, 4 pm to 5.30 pm).
Conceptual design for the panel discussions: VIENNAFAIR, in
cooperation with viennaartweek.
Art for the museum
>VIENNAFAIR<, conwert and The ALBERTINA, the internationally
renowned museum with one of the most extensive graphic collections
worldwide, are proud to present the conwert contemporary fund. conwert
Immobilien Invest AG, the leading company in development of real estate
properties dating from before 1945 at the Austrian Stock Exchange,
provides a fund worth of 20,000 Euros, for buying international
contemporary art works on paper for the collection of The ALBERTINA.
The ALBERTINA doubles the amount which makes a buying budget of
40,000 Euros. The director of The ALBERTINA, Klaus Albrecht Schroder,
will select the works during the press preview on April 5, 2006, at the VIENNAFAIR
Big dimensions
At the VIENNAFAIR a special presentation is dedicated to the
sculpture, especially the large sculpture for open spaces. This year, large
sculptures will draw the onlookers’ attention to the VIENNAFAIR and will
guide the visitors to the fair entrance. This special presentation is intended
to inspire builders and architects of large public and private building
projects and to demonstrate them the possibilities large sculptures can
offer.
The pric/ze of art
The prices of the art works play an important role at the VIENNAFAIR.
None the less important, however, are the presentations of the individual
exhibitors - they are decisive for closing sales as well as for the overall
impression of the art exhibition.
This is the reason why at the VIENNAFAIR 2006 the VIENNAFAIR
GALLERY AWARD, donated by the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, will be
bestowed on the best stall design and presentation for the first time. Such
an award not only enhances the galleries’ sales but is also intended to
create an incentive to take participate in the fair. The general core
intentions of the Chamber of Commerce are the optimum presentation and
to promote sales - this makes the Vienna Chamber of Commerce an ideal
partner for this initiative. The award is endowed with prize money totalling
5,000 Euros.
The award will be bestowed on Wednesday, April 5, at the professional
preview at the VIENNAFAIR, by the president of the Vienna Chamber of
Commerce, Brigitte Jank.
