The Province of Milan has launched "inContemporanea, la rete dell'arte", a project in support of the production and promotion of contemporary art as a resource for boosting the development of the area, not only at a cultural level, but also socially and economically. The initiative will take two main directions: organising further events in the course of a three-year programme and enhancing existing venues in the province.
New public project for contemporary art in Milan
The Province of Milan's new project for enhancing and promoting contemporary art
gets under way.
The Province of Milan has launched "inContemporanea, la rete dell'arte", a project
in support of the production and promotion of contemporary art as a resource for
boosting the development of the area, not only at a cultural level, but also
socially and economically. The initiative will take two main directions: organising
further events in the course of a three-year programme and enhancing existing venues
in the province.
The former includes: a series of lectures on contemporary art with international
guests. Entitled ''Perche' non parli? Fatti d'arte e Conversazioni d'arte'', they
will be organised jointly with Unicredit and held at Spazio Oberdan starting from 28
February 2006; the launch of a competition by invitation to produce a public work of
art for the Casa delle culture del mondo (a venue the Province is currently setting
up in Milan) and, as of this year, the provision of a grant for residencies abroad
for Italian artists.
The second direction will take the form of the "numero zero" event. This features
the co-ordinated involvement of the many and various venues on the Milan area art
scene and is scheduled to take place from 22 March to 2 April, animating the city at
various points: streets, former warehouses, swimming pools and exhibitions spaces.
In particular, 16 cultural associations, seen by the Province of Milan as playing a
key role in the city because of their cultural dynamism, have been involved in
realising special projects. Supported and co-ordinated by the Province, they are the
result of over a year's work. A number of the topical issues have been proposed and
developed jointly: interculturality, civil life, and the relationship with the city.
Alongside the events held at the various participating associations, there will be
projects that explore novel ways of reaching a wide public, from round-the-clock
performances to video screenings in shop windows, from parties and happenings to
street choirs.
Other associations will open their archives of work by young artists, organise
meetings with foreign curators, put on theatrical performances and live media
events, and set up installations in the street, thus providing numerous
opportunities for a wide cross-section of the public to meet. The associations
involved are: aMAZE, artandgallery, Assab One, Atelier Spazio Xpo', C/O careof,
esterni, freeUndo, Isola Art Center, Museo Teo, Neon, O'Artoteca, Reporting System,
Viafarini, Wurmkos, Xing, and Associazione Zona Tortona.
''numero zero'' also includes the exhibition ''Ecce Uomo (33+1) artisti
contemporanei da collezioni private a Milano'' curated by Gemma De Angelis Testa and
Sergio Risaliti and organised jointly by the Province of Milan and ACACIA (the
italian association of the friends of contemporary art), which will be hosted at
Spazio Oberdan from 23 March to 21 May. The exhibition explores the iconography of
the Ecce Homo genre, thus, pain and its meaning in contemporary art (works by
Marina Abramovic, Maurizio Cattelan, Damien Hirst, William Kentridge, Anselm Kiefer,
Juan Munoz, Shirin Neshat, Thomas Struth, Bill Viola, Chen Zen and others).
The event will also see the participation of thirty-three Milan galleries, open from
6:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight on Thursday 23 March as part of the "Gallerie Aperte"
initiative. The Foundations: Prada, Ratti, Nicola Trussardi and Stelline will also
be participating, as will the Accademia di Brera, The Nuova Accademia di Belle
Arti, the Scuola di Arti Visive of the Istituto Europeo del Design in Milan and the
European Cultural Institutes, which will all be holding their own events.
All these participants, each with its distinctive characteristics, perfectly embody
the contemporary art scene and embrace all the forms and uses of contemporary art
currently available in the city. The aim of ''numero zero'' is to highlight the
synergy that can be achieved between all the key players, both private and public,
in Milan's contemporary art world by involving them in a network. Through ''numero
zero'' Daniela Benelli, Province of Milan Councillor for culture, cultures and
integration, intends to ''reveal the wealth created by contemporary art in the Milan
area'' and to ''highlight the promotion of a wide spectrum of the visual arts that
is already underway and which will continue with many further initiatives this year
and over the next few years.''
The complete programme of projects and initiatives is available on the
http://www.incontemporanea.it website.
For the duration of ''numero zero'' (from 22 March to 2 April) an infopoint will be
open at Spazio Oberdan (Viale Vittorio Veneto 2, Milan). In addition, there will be
an infopoint at the Province of Milan stand in MiArt.
