Antoni Muntadas (Barcelona 1942) addresses through his works social, political and communications issues, the relationship between public and private space within social frameworks, and investigations of channels of information and the ways they may be used to censor central information or promulgate ideas. He works projects in different media such as photography, video, publications, Internet and multi-media installations.
On Translation: Stand By With the general On Translation title (degree) Muntadas has presented more than twenty projects from 1995, with the purpose of thinking about the concept of translation from a perspective that includes cultural, linguistic, political and economic questions.
On Translation: Stand By is one of the most recent projects that form a part of this creative family. It appeared at the 51ma Venice Biennale and now it forms a part of this exhibition. It is a series of colour photographies, showing people in diverse scenes and cities of the world (cultural spaces, offices of immigration, religious enclosures, airports, etc.).
In Stand By emphasis is done in the urban contemporary rituals, there offers himself a specific vision of one of the most common ceremonies of the modern society. A set of men that forms a row with a purpose and in a period of time determined. Photographies that seek to demonstrate what has of gregarious and impersonal the conduct humanizes; images that in turn indicate stereotypes and redundancies.
In Site 05: Fear / Fear The video In Site 05: Fear / Fear, which also forms a part of On Translation, which was realized in the border San Diego (The) (United States) / Tijuana (Mexico). He gathers testimonies of the inhabitants of the zone concerning the concept Fear / Fear in all its dimensions: as feeling, as daily reality and as political reality. The wide value that has this work is the plurality of the testimonies, presented alternative, on the part of resident citizens aside and to other one of the border. Among the blocks of interventions, Muntadas has inserted television images and other materials of file that represent of diverse ways the expression Fear / Fear. It is necessary to indicate the campaign of Nixon, ex-president of The United States, in favour of the defense of the citizen and the control of the crime.
Exhibited in the street from April 21 the phrase “Attention: perception needs participation" that forms a part of the project On Translation: Warning will be in view for the pedestrians in the street in Madrid, where La Fa'brica Galeri'a is located. It is a way of saying that the messages have many readings and, simultaneously, to provoke in the spectator a critical look on the art, but also on the reality.
