52nd International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, 4 - 9 May 2006
Oberhausen 2006 features expanded market
In 2006, the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, with its annual
average of more than 5,000 current titles traditionally one of the largest
international markets for the short format, will expand its market services
even further.
Screenings
This year for the first time, Oberhausen is organising a programme of
screenings of works straddling the borderline between film and art.
Representatives from the twelve leading international distributors of
experimental works will present their latest acquisitions, presenting the
perfect opportunity to gain an in-depth overview of the current status of
media art production and to make contacts with the most important players
in the field. Distributors who seldom make their way to Europe, for example
from China, Japan or Brazil, join the list of leading European sources:

Video Library
From 4 to 9 May, visitors will have the opportunity to put together their
own personal list from the over 5,000 current productions expected to be
available, and then view their selections at one of 17 stations equipped
with the latest technology. In addition, the entire short film inventory of
the international online platform www.reelport.com can be accessed for
viewing. Use of the Video Library (the former film market) is restricted to
accredited professional visitors only.
As a special service, the Short Film Festival will also offer the
programmes shown at the Screenings, along with additional recent works from
the distributors’ catalogues, for viewing at the Video Library.
A bilingual catalogue with information and contact addresses for all titles
will be available as of 20 April on a password-protected page at
http://www.kurzfilmtage.de, offering search options according to various criteria.

Podium
Today’s information society gives rise to many new questions concerning
media production, opinion formation and access to information. With its
Podium, Oberhausen is now launching a series of discussions on aesthetic,
technological, economic and cultural policy issues in an effort to shed
light on their relevance for the production, distribution and presentation
of the short form. In the course of five events, visitors will have the
opportunity to participate in daily discussions between 10:00 a.m. and
12:30 p.m. on several pertinent issues.
In addition to topics such as cultural policy and media education, the
discussion on 8 May will look at sales strategies for moving images. Under
the title Moving images for sale, Anita Beckers (Anita Beckers Gallery,
tbc), Stuart Comer (Tate Modern), Christopher Eamon (Kramlich Collection),
Bjorn Melhus (artist and professor at the Art Academy Kassel), Ian White
(freelance curator and art critic) and Lori Zippay (Electronic Arts
Intermix) will talk about new distribution channels for film and video art.
On 9 May, the discussion will revolve around Internet television as
possible future for short formats: Is the convergence of Internet and
television the wave of the future? What role will "on-demand" options play?
Does so-called Internet TV represent a serious exploitation option for
short formats? Participants will include David Brocca (Producer IFILM Short
Films Channel and Manager of the IFILM User Video Channel).
Accreditation deadline for the 52nd International Short Film Festival
Oberhausen is 10 April 2006.
The accreditation form will be available starting 1 February 2006 at
www.kurzfilmtage.de as a download, or it can be requested from the
Oberhausen press office.
