Juana Valdes

Paul Sharpe Contemporary Art, New York

First Major New York Exhibition Of An Important Afro-Cuban Artist. Valdes' exploration of issues inherent in migration cause the viewer to ponder comfort and home versus disruption and rootlessness.

comunicato stampa

PSCA is pleased to present a solo exhibition of important works by the Afro-Cuban artist Juana Valdes who lives in the United States. The first-ever survey exhibit will feature seminal works from a 10-year period in the artist's career, covering the 1990s and 2000s.

This will be the first major exhibition of the artist's work in a New York gallery. Valdes' work has been included in numerous exhibits at not-for-profit spaces and she has been included in group shows in prestigious commercial galleries.

Juana Valdes, one of the most important emerging Cuban-born artists living in America today, will present a survey of conceptual work at Paul Sharpe Contemporary Art in Chelsea this May. This will be the first time to enjoy signature works not shown together before. The exhibition will be on view from Tuesday, May 9, through Saturday, June 10, 2006. A reception for the artist will be held on Tuesday, May 11, from 6 to 9 PM.

Valdes' exploration of issues inherent in migration cause the viewer to ponder comfort and home versus disruption and rootlessness. Known for powerful works such as "Otra Ves Al Mar" - a wedding dress festooned with fish hooks - Valdes' accomplishments in various media have short-listed her for a Cintas Fellowship and has gained her placement in numerous museum shows, including El Museo del Barrio and the Newark Museum.

Valdes was born in Cuba and came to the United States with her family in 1971. Her displacement in childhood informs her work; leaving Cuba and growing up in the United States. One of her first experiences in the arts took place when she assisted the sculptor Christo with the installation of the Surrounded Island project in the Florida Keys. This experience, at a very young age, influenced her views on art and the process of art making.

Valdes participated in artist residencies at Smack Mellon in Brooklyn and a three-month program for international artists and designers at The European Ceramic Work Center in Holland. She has participated in exhibitions in Holland, Australia, Belgium, France, and Poland. In New York her work has been exhibited at a combination of alternative spaces, galleries, and museums: Art in General, El Museo del Barrio, WhiteBox Gallery, Bronx River Art Center, and Nohra Haime Gallery. In 1998 she was a US participant for The P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center International and National Studio Residency Program and exhibition at PS.1 Institute for Contemporary Art. She received a Pollack-Krasner grant in 1998. She is also a recipient of the Cuban Artist Fund Grant and was awarded the Cosby fellowship to attend Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1995.
