Brad Hammond: De-Tuned Channels

He has participated in a number of
group exhibitions including video/art shows such
as Scramble (1996; Civic Gallery, Braamfontein)
and Channel (1999; Association for the Visual
Arts, Cape Town), and Personal Concerns at the
Rembrandt Gallery 1999.
Brad was a merit award winner in the Sasol New
Signatures (1998) and the ABSA Atelier
Competition (July 1999). In June 1999, he won
the Kempton Park/Thembisa Metropolitan
Councils annual art competition.
The De-tuned Channels form a series of images
that take television frequencies as their starting
point. These are then translated into large wax
etchings. The channels are a metaphor for
modes of consciousness, mostly meditative or
unexplored landscapes.
Most of the images take months to complete as
they consist of large fields of tiny marks. This
imbues the images with a sense of infinity or
spaciousness into which the mind can dissolve.
The channels are concerned with the unmapped
areas of experience, images which are intended
to be felt, rather than understood.
While the channels draw on contemporary
technological sources, the work also displays a
firm commitment to painting and drawing, which
reflects Brads belief that these mediums are
constantly relevant to a contemporary world.
In fact, the virtual landscape presents an exciting
new territory that is at once inner and outer,
offering endless possibilities.
The exhibition opens on Wednesday 8 March at
6:00pm. The exhibition will be opened by Karel
Nel.
This exhibition continues the mission of the JHB
Civic Gallery to support and encourage young
and emerging South African artists.
