David Paton: recon(text)ual

JHB Civic Gallery, Braamfontein

comunicato stampa

The JHB Civic Gallery is delighted to be hosting an exhibition of recent work by David Paton. David is currently a lecturer in the Fine Art Department at Technikon Witwatersrand and has worked extensively in Art Education. David's work divides naturally into different CHAPTERS which explore the diverse relationship between image and text.

Some of these works explore the temporal unfolding of meaning through diverse readings of images as texts, texts as images and variations thereof. The works consist of metal sheets onto which texts have been screen-printed. These words have been closely chosen for their ability to contain various forms of meaning:
(cult)ure, y(our), c(harm), con(text), elimi(nation), nu(clear)

These words have been chosen as they contain (or are contained in) other words which have tenuous or little relationship with one another. The relationship between the two words (or lack thereof) signifies a containment of meaning, which is literalised in and by bottles fastened to the plate.

Other work includes sculptures, prints, video, photography and an Artist's Book.
