A conference on variable media
"Should video art be preserved on tape or DVD? Can museums collect
Web sites? What does preserving an ephemeral installation have in
common with reenacting a theatrical performance?"
Organized by Film and Media Art's Senior Curator John G. Hanhardt
and Assistant Curator Jon Ippolito, this two-day symposium --
presented in conjunction with GLOBAL GUGGENHEIM: SELECTIONS FROM
THE EXTENDED COLLECTION -- unveils The Variable Media Initiative,
which the Guggenheim Museum has proposed as a solution to the
contested issues of new media preservation. The Variable Media
Initiative proposes that artists pass on guidelines as to how
their artworks might be translated into alternate mediums once
their current formats become obsolete.
In keeping with the cross-disciplinary nature of this paradigm, a
series of focused discussions will compare artworks created in
entirely different mediums that nonetheless present similar
preservation challenges.
