From Here to There
Jana Sterbak was Canada’s official representative at the 2003 Venice Biennale. Her
offering at the Centre for Fine Arts will be a double multi-screen video
installation. From Here To There is made up of a succession of short sequences
chronicling the adventures of a young terrier, Stanley, on the banks of the St
Lawrence, the gateway through which the first French explorers arrived in Canada.
Denied both the usual unfolding of a story and any aesthetic choice, visitors will
see life as it is experienced 30 cm above the ground, filmed by a mini-camera
attached to the neck of a Jack Russell. The film is not just a voyage in space, from
Canada to Venice, but also a journey through time, combined with a homage to the
history of the cinema. Paradox often plays a role in Sterbak’s work: to this
spontaneous, even playful lightness, she intends adding a more sombre, serious
element for the Brussels exhibition, evoking the decrepitude of the dead city of
Venice.
