Known for his multidimensional installations about Latin American politics, Motta has been described by The New York Times as "part activist, part paranoid." For "A Brief History of US Interventions," he presents an enormous chalkboard, on which is handwritten a brief genealogy of 163 U.S. interventions throughout the world from 1801 until 2006.
A Brief History of US Interventions
Plus Ultra Gallery and Schroeder Romero are very pleased to present the second in
our series of installations in the project space between our galleries. Please join
us Thursday, June 1, 6-8pm, for the premier of "A Brief History of US
Interventions," a chalkboard/mural project by New York-based Colombian artist Carlos
Motta.
Known for his multidimensional installations about Latin American politics, Motta
has been described by The New York Times as "part activist, part paranoid." For "A
Brief History of US Interventions," he presents an enormous chalkboard, on which is
handwritten a brief genealogy of 163 U.S. interventions throughout the world from
1801 until 2006. At the end of the mural is a shelf with chalk and erasers, inviting
the viewer to rewrite this history or insert addendums, rationales, excuses, etc.
The installation is designed to evolve over time, with an incalculable set of
potential outcomes leading to the final version of history that survives at the end
of the project.
Carlos Motta has exhibited widely throughout the world. Upcoming exhibitions include
Manifesta 6 School, Cyprus and the Cisneros Fontanals Foundation, Miami. Motta is a
graduate of the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program and has an
MFA from Bard College.
