Cildo Meireles, Ernesto Neto and Valeska Soares

Daros Latinamerica, Zurich

Three high-potential-artists from Brazil. Seductions is much more than the title of the exhibition. The installations will seduce us to confront our own emotions and needs, and by doing so they seduce us to engage in a dialogue with art as such. Three exemplary installations highlight similarities as well as differences within the wide field of contemporary Brazilian art.

comunicato stampa

Seducoes With Seducoes (Seductions) the Swiss collection of Latin-American contemporary art, Daros-Latinamerica shows three high-potential-artists from Brazil in Zurich: Ernesto Neto, Valeska Soares and Cildo Meireles. Daros-Latinamerica’s latest exhibition, Seducoes opens the view onto the wide field of contemporary Brazilian art.

Three exemplary installations highlight similarities as well as differences within the current scene. Showing from June 9 to October 15, 2006 at Daros-Latinamerica’s show-room in Zurich’s “art quarter," the Lowenbrau-Areal, part of the exhibition will be three large-scale installations by Ernesto Neto (born 1964, based in Rio de Janeiro), Cildo Meireles (born 1948, based in Rio de Janeiro), and Valeska Soares (born 1957, based in New York). Just one hour by train, Zurich is easy to reach from Basel and during Art Basel. Certainly it is worth a trip.

The pieces can’t be more different regarding material and message. But each of them engages us in its own way. Seductions is much more than the title of the exhibition. Each of the installations will seduce us to confront our own emotions and needs, and by doing so they seduce us to engage in a dialogue with art as such.

In his installation, Ernesto Neto addresses issues relating to sensory perception. Entering his Globiobabel Nudeliome Landmoonaia, the visitor encounters a biomorphic world. Hanging “columns" of stockings generate an aura of intimacy and security.

The uterus-like ambience exerts a peaceful, calming effect. It encourages to linger and make ourselves comfortable. Centering on the human body and the sense of touch, Globiobabel Nudeliome Landmoonaia aims to create a feeling of complete physical well-being.

Cildo Meireles is one of Brazil’s leading contemporary artists and has already twice participated in documenta exhibitions. In Zurich he will be showing Missao / Missoes (como construir catedrais) (Mission - How to Build Cathedrals). This installation from 1987 is a construction of 2,000 cow bones and 800 eucharistic hosts and hangs from the ceiling above a rectangle consisting of 600,000 coins. Pointing to crucial factors in life, the components of the work are both symbols and artistic materials. Through these, and through the colour of the installation, the artist engages the viewer’s mind and senses.

Like Ernesto Neto’s work, Vanishing Point by Valeska Soares is based on sensory perception - but takes an entirely different approach. Her Vanishing Point is a characteristic example of the rigorous, minimalist aesthetic favoured by the artist.

The installation has the form of fifteen steel basins arranged like hedges in a Baroque garden-maze and filled with an amber-coloured liquid consisting of perfume. As it evaporates, the liquid spreads its scent throughout the exhibition space, producing an oppressive atmosphere.

The combination of the cold steel constructions with the very intense sweet and heavy odour creates a sense of strong contrast. Moreover the intensive aroma draws attention to the fact that the tools which humans use to control nature are also subject to metamorphosis, to a process of growth and decay.

Daros-Latinamerica began collecting contemporary Latin-American art in 2000. With almost 1,000 paintings, videos, installations and photographs, it now ranks among the largest private collections of art from Latin-America.
