City Sonics

Different Venues, Mons

This summer, Mons breaks through the wall of sound! City Sonics presents over twenty installations, spaces, radio and audio-visual rooms, performances, and workshops. Sound forges a link between urban spaces and architecture, it leaves the installations and artworks and invades places of national heritage (City Hall), of daily life (the Ilot Grand Place), of knowledge (the Faculte' Polytechnique Boulevard Dolez), and of culture (from the Carre' des Arts to the Musiques Nouvelles, from Technocite'/CeCN, to the Machine a' Eau and the Maison Folie), mapping out the project’s itinerary for visitors/listeners/flaneurs. There are over forty different artists working in all sorts media—music, plastic arts, multimedia, radio—in this third edition of what has become, by now, a rendezvous not only for audiophiles (every horizon confused) but also, more broadly, for everyone intrigued by inventive adventures.

Plastic sounds, organic sounds, space-sounds are all also so many non-linear time-sounds … grouped under an appellation as hybrid-like in nature as the practices it denominates: sound or audio art. This resolutely nomad art of sound reinvents the (rare) pleasure of listening. At a time when our ears are prey to endemic pollution, are afflicted by all the noises of the world, and are seemingly less and less capable of concentrating their auricles on one source of dialogue, these works, which are as diverse as the sensibilities which brought them to life, reaffirm the essential presence (from the artistic to the therapeutic) and power of sonorous phenomena. They lend a second, invisible yet sensible, layer to the buildings they travel across and to the bodies they envelop.

As was the case in previous years, we’ve opted to leave all the entries open: there is contemporary music in all its plurality of perspectives, participative apparatuses, radiophonic creations that escape the transmitter, works where sound and images dialogue on an equal plane … sound-machine, sound-voice, sound-image … so many floating territories that question our perceptions and drag us into their drifts.

Most of the works presented in City Sonics were created specifically for it, and the ones that were not are being exhibited for the first time in Belgium, after being readapted to this new context of diffusion/exhibition. This circuit of works would not have been possible without the essential support of the producers, the City of Mons, Musiques Nouvelles, Technocite' and the Centre des Ecritures Contemporaines et Nume'riques, and our associated partners, La Manufactor (responsible for the technical direction).

Performances (notably for the Fete de la Musique and for the opening of the Festival au Carre') complete the sound circuit. This year, City Sonics proudly announces its first cross-border collaboration with les Folies (30 June—3 July), which was organized by le mane'ge (Sce'ne nationale de Maubeuge) and will present installations produced by City Sonics along with unusual and insolent audio performances.
