Each show will have a mix of painting, sculpture, prints, installation, performance, poetry, music, video and photographic work brought to Twickenham by artists from all over the world exploring concepts of Arcadia, the beauty of landscape, the life of the imagination and the spiritual values inherent in fine art.
The London Biennale was created in 1998 by David Medalla in conversation with Adam Nankervis,
both internationally renowned artists and curators, as a unique response to the art world of Biennales which places finances and celebrity before love of art and beauty.
From 2000 the London Biennale has presented a series of Summer art events and exhibitions in London
bi-annually, and in Rio, Berlin, Rome, Sydney and USA in intervening years. Communicating by e.mail
and a common love of their work the London Biennale has attracted artists with international
reputations, it has thrived beyond all expectation without bureaucracy, manifesto, bank account
or premises to be recognised internationally amongst the official biennales which promote art at huge expense.
The present series of shows is the idea of artist Jill Rock, born and bred in Twickenham, who grew to love the timeless magic of the Thames at Twickenham, recognising in it as so many artists, poets, writers and musicians before, a quality in the sheen of light which excites the imagination.
The first show, IN ARCADIA which features over 30 artists has an extraordinary diversity reflecting the many nationalities represented, with thought provoking installations by David Medalla, Loli Cardenoso, Katie Sollohub and Mali, beautiful stained glass windows made especially for the Stables Gallery by Kathy Shaw, a magnificent stellar Oracle seated in the courtyard by Thomas Nicolai from Erfurt, Germany, a Time Machine making reference to H.G. Well's story, originally placed in the area of the Richmond riverside, by Jill Rock and Richard Cardew, a fairy bed by local blacksmith Shelley Thomas, paintings by Judith Bibby, Margaret Atkinson, Ananda Gayatri, Francesca Cho, Jungah Lhee, Junghee Min, fine draughtsmanship by Neil Harvey, prints by Adam Nankervis, Marko Stepanov, Marisa Rueda, Raj Verdi, Jose Verhaegh, Lynne McRitchie and Simon Millgate, a unicorn installed in the French Kings Stables by Martin Sexton, a Museum devoted to Arcadia by Kitty Reford, writing by local writer Peter Nockold on the Birth of Hermes, and 'checkout' a collection of works taken in a suitcase to Rome for a show at the Raphaella Gallery by Lucia Cipriani. DVDs made by artists from all over the world will also show a truly international understanding of the Arcadian life.
