New Evidence
Mbongeni Richman Buthelezi has been producing works made from recycled
roofing plastics for the past 14 years. He initially started experimenting
with this material when he did not have sufficient funds for the traditional
art materials. With this unique material and probably one of the only
artists in South Africa working with this material, Buthelezi was invited on
numerous occasions to exhibit his work overseas which resulted in many
residencies and long stays overseas, especially in Germany.
Although Buthelezi has received a reputation as the 'plastic' artist, he too
produces charcoals and watercolours which is rarely known to the public.
Buthelezi quotes "many people don't realise that my technique is firmly
supported by drawing and painting particulary in watercolours and this is a
very serious component of my work". New Evidence, an exhibition of a new
body of works is made predominantly with recycled plastics, watercolours,
and charcoal drawings. This solo show in South Africa where all three these
mediums will be showcased, will be a first for Buthelezi. Buthelezi says "to
me this will be like a revival of who am I and where I come from before
discovering the interesting material called Plastic Fantastic".
New Evidence will investigate the journey through which Buthelezi has
travelled in rediscovering himself and how socio-political issues like
housing, health, HIV & AIDS, education and politics have affected him.
According to him it is no secret that our country is facing many challenges
that cannot be overcome overnight. His watercolours and drawings on the show
enable him to revisit his artisic history as a means of seeking new evidence
to pave way for the future both emotionally and physically.
