a Romanian avant-gardist

comunicato stampa

M.H. Maxy, a Romanian avant-gardist
24 June to 24 September 2006

M.H. Maxy (1895 - 1971) is regarded as one of the foremost representatives of the Romanian avant-garde. As part of the Dada movement, he made his debut in 1916, going on to pursue a career as a painter, a designer of book covers and stage designs as well as a book illustrator, a theoretician and director of the Academy/Artelor Decorative (similar to the Bauhaus) and the State Museum of Art in Bucharest. He contributes both images and texts to Romanian magazines such as Contimporanul, 75 HP, Punct, Integral and Unu, and takes part in various key exhibitions. His later work is constructivist and cubist in style.

Toon Hermans: 100 paintings
Maria blue, farm white, poppy red
17 June to 10 September 2006

Toon Hermans (1916 - 2000) did not call himself a painter. He considered himself to be an artist.
'You see the colours in a good song, and you can hear the sound of a beautiful painting’ was one of his apposite comments. It was not until the publication of the first large monograph about his painting works that Hermans came into the public eye as a painter. The exhibition at the Kunsthal is, for the most part, made up of previously unexhibited works from the artist’s estate.

Faces of the World
Eddy Posthuma de Boer
13 May to 8 October 2006

The Kunsthal is staging an exhibition of works by Eddy Posthuma de Boer in honour of his 75th birthday. During a career spanning fifty years, Posthuma de Boer visited eighty countries. The photographs he made of hundreds of people in countless situations all over the world come under review in this special birthday exhibition.

The compact building designed by the Rotterdam firm of architects OMA (Rem Koolhaas/Fumi Hoshino), contains a surprisingly large exhibition space: 3300 square metres, distributed over three main halls, a design-gallery and a photo-gallery. This means that five or six exhibitions can be held simultaneously in the Kunsthal. A spacious auditorium, a cafe'-restaurant, a bookshop and a VIP room complete the ensemble.
