‘marathon’ in the park
Serpentine Gallery Marathon: London is the first of two 24-hour non-stop Interview
Marathons being staged in and around the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2006, designed
by Rem Koolhaas and Cecil Balmond, with Arup. The Interview Marathons are part of
the Time Out Park Nights at the Serpentine Gallery programme.
Guests come from a spectrum of fields and disciplines - from artists and writers to
scientists and historians, and include David Bailey, Zygmunt Bauman, Hussein
Chalayan, Brian Eno, Gilbert and George, Zaha Hadid, Richard Hamilton, Damien Hirst,
Jude Kelly, Hanif Kureishi, Doris Lessing, Ken Loach, Gautam Malkani, Richard
Rogers, and Juergen Teller.
Developed and hosted by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Rem Koolhaas, Serpentine Gallery
Marathon: London has been devised in association with a team of guest advisers. The
marathons are an extension of Hans Ulrich Obrist’s renowned interview series, but
also of other projects and exhibitions on which he has collaborated with Rem
Koolhaas, such as Cities on the Move and Mutations, which explored notions of the
city and how to create a ‘portrait’ of ever-changing cities at a given moment.
The event will be recorded and a publication created, making an archive of a moment
in time of 21st century London. “The Interview Marathons treat the past as a toolbox
with which to make an almost archaeological slice of the present," comments Obrist,
“they are also intended as ongoing research that can lead to exhibitions, projects,
publications and all manner of future collaborations."
Rem Koolhaas’ intention was for the Pavilion to be ‘architecture of content,’ with
particular attention paid to the conversations, discussions and events that take
place within it. Beyond exhibitions, this project raises the question of how new
communication methods and formats can be created for discussing culture and society,
encouraging both a venturing out from art into other disciplines and a crossover of
their respective audiences.
Julia Peyton-Jones, Director of the Serpentine Gallery said: “This is a most
exciting development for the Serpentine Gallery’s programmes, and we hope, for
London."

Serpentine Gallery Pavilion
Each summer, the Serpentine commissions an internationally acclaimed architect to
design a temporary Pavilion for its lawn. The programme is unique worldwide.
Conceived by Julia Peyton-Jones, Director, Serpentine Gallery, the project
represents a rare opportunity for architects to create a more experimental structure
in the United Kingdom, where none of those invited has ever built before. Those
selected previously are Zaha Hadid, 2000, Daniel Libeskind with Arup, 2001, Toyo Ito
with Arup, 2002, Oscar Niemeyer, 2003, MVRDV, 2004 (unrealised) and A'lvaro
Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura with Cecil Balmond - Arup, 2005.
Time Out Park Nights at the Serpentine Gallery includes the 24-hour Interview
