Solo show
Jason McCoy Inc. is
pleased to present an exhibition of new
work by Christian Vincent, who is considered one of the most
innovative Realist painters of his generation.
In this new body of work, Vincent continues to combine
excellent technique with a distinct sense of luminous color
and a gift for poetic storytelling. However, thematically this
is a point of departure as the artist shifts his focus from
complex human relationships towards one pre-dominant
subject: woman. Depicted in at times epic scale, these
compositions translate as metaphors for aspects of the
female existence, in particular, the embrace of physical and
emotional changes of the female body, her inherent
vulnerability, and fertility.
Though its content is rather specific, Vincent’s vocabulary is
highly symbolic and far from literal. In Spring, for example,
a group of youthful women blessed with Botticelli-esque
physical perfection, engage in dance-like movements that
seem as ritualistic as they are free spirited. A swarm of
butterflies accompanies the scene, telling of the colorful
transformations life can behold. Overall, the mood is one of
hopeful expectation and mysterious suspense: something
meaningful is bound to happen and it is Vincent’s strength
that he is able to leave the solution to the riddle vague and
instead, encourages his audience to search for their own
interpretations.
Born in 1966 in Santa Monica, CA, Vincent studied at the Art
Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA. His work has been
exhibited extensively in the United Stated, including at the
Naples Art Museum, Naples, FL; Susquehanna Art Museum,
Harrisburg, PA; Frye Art Museum, Seattle, WA; and Arnot Art
Museum, Elmira, NY. Recent acquisitions include the
Collection of the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art,
Kansas City, MO. Vincent lives and works in Los Angeles.
This will be the first exhibition of Vincent’s work at the gallery.
A catalogue will be published and available through the gallery
with full-color reproductions.
