Steve Turner Gallery is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition, Efface': Contemporary Practices in Revelation and Subterfuge, curated by Malik Gaines featuring works by William Cordova, Mamadou Modou Dieng, Kianga Ford, Kalup Linzy, Nzuji de Magalhaes, Kianja Strobert, Lauren Woods and Brenna Youngblood.
Efface' brings together the work of eight emerging artists working in diverse media, all of whom reflect the complexity of representation in contemporary art. Like the ballet position efface', which at once conceals and reveals the body, these artists dance elegantly across conventional forms, using them to question meaning, perception, the body and the self, often showing us a little while hiding even more. These artists work in a range of media including painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, photography and video and often incorporate into their work found objects. Their uncanny juxtapositions and incongruous depictions of space create a strange sense of beauty in the gaps between expectation and imagination.
The artists included in Efface' are from diverse backgrounds and live in various American cities. Two are African, one is Afro-Peruvian and five are African American. What they have in common is an experimental approach to aesthetics and identity, as well as recent training from top studio programs in the United States where content and form are considered both practically and theoretically.
